Philosophy of Art

In Praise of Shadows

I noted before that I've seen several themes show up here and there in my image library: the wide use of doors, windows, shadows, and others.  Surely, loving the pursuit and writing with light, these are bound to show up once in a while, how could they not?  But they appear quite a bit in my images and I've wondered why?  If I were to recline on a couch and have a psychotherapist draw out my earliest memories would they find untold treasures or horrors pertaining to these themes?  Probably not...

You're Unique... Just Like Everybody Else!

The other day I wanted to write a review on iTunes for a podcast that is really neat and run by some great ladies.  One in particular is pretty fine, too!  But I've never written a review before so I needed to come up with a username.  I take it that this would be my moniker for all future reviews so it's gotta be slick, right?!  So I went with ol' faithful, MikeD.  Apple graciously let me know that "This nickname is taken. Enter another and try again." No prob.  Hey, who wouldn't want to to roll with the name of one of the Beastie Boys?...especially the one that gets respect!

"Did You Photoshop That?"

Let's first get out of the way that the question may sound a bit archaic.  Since such a massive amount of images are now snapped on phones instead of cameras, "Photoshopping" images is all but gone.  Does anybody ask, "Did you Snapseed that?" or "Did you VSCO that?"  Probably not.  Editing is assumed, filters and presets are omnipresent.  Anyhow, let the reader know that here I'm talking about DSLR images and also of landscape images.   Later I will do a post on the ethics and artfulness of editing urban street images.  For what it's worth, I found the following stat after some looking into the matter, but who knows if it has been Enroned or not? 90% of people have only taken photos on a camera phone versus a camera... Wow!...

I Swear I'm not Anti-Social

As I start to rock 'n roll in the world of photography in a public manner, I'm faced with the inevitable... to IG or not to IG?  That is the question.  Let it be known that Instagram here serves as a metonym for social media generally.  Facebook, 500px, flickr ,Behance, and other digital media publishing platforms ad infinitum.  One more qualification is that I mean social media for networking, artistic, and photographic business purposes.  I make no reference here to sharing with granny some pics of the kids marching out their first steps, which is awesome!...
